Common Licensing Requirements In Most States
Every state’s licensing requirements are different for handymen.
Most states do not require a license in order to handle basic repairs and improvements. However, almost all states have limitations on the services that you can provide legally without either a contracting or specialty license.
Often, state law will require specialty licenses to handle any plumbing, electrical, or HVAC services.
Additionally, there is usually a limit on the total dollar amount of a project you can handle without a license. In some states, you can only handle projects up to $500 (including materials) without a license. In other states, there is no limit!
However, even if you don’t need a contractor’s license to provide the services you want to provide, getting a business license is always a good idea and is highly recommended.
